As I said in my: Theory of The Universe, all creatures here on Planet Earth are supported by the Sun, the Solar System, the Galaxy and the entire Universe... and that includes Universal support of HUMANS [male & female].

I personally do not accept the "Big Bang Theory", but I find: Big Bang Banking to be a funny one... cos they destroy themselves in exponential explosive-greed!

I am more apt to consider that the Universe rotates within a TORUS .. and this is why the Galactic and Sun system(s) appear to move apart and expand. Just imagine that the Solar and Galactic system is turning [orbiting] within the endless rotations of a magnetic Torus .. and it may become clear to you that "expansion" is a rotational illusion.

Anyway, back to the "Big Bang" Banking System = Destruction/Explosion...

My theory is that the Universe is not a Big Bang phenomenon, but is a rotational magnetic phenomenon. My reasoning for this is observing NATURE. The basic - all around you Nature - that you too can observe!!

Look and pay attention to water .. to plants, grass, soil, clouds .. to air, moisture, everything that is around you.

On Earth, human societies are in complete chaos! Why are humans in chaos? Debt = Greed squared, where the amount of debt is created from exponential explosions of greed.

Why would anyone want to create endless entanglements of debt? I mean .. Nature does not do this, and so why would humans behave in this way? All of Nature is EXCHANGE and not DEBT! Nutrient Exchange

In the natural world: plants, animals, fungi, tree roots, plant roots, insects, fish, air, oxygen, carbon-dioxide, minerals, atmospheric pressure, soil microbes, nutrients, particles and sub-atomic particles EXCHANGE... We live within a natural cosmic trading system of exchange.

Nature manifests what is needed for physical survival... and if Nature does not manifest it then there is no "exchange". For some reason, exchange of resources between humans has become an explosion in greed. How much more can humans eat? How many fish or animals can humans consume? How much financial wealth can humans accumulate? How many forests can humans destroy .. before you destroy yourself?

We humans rely on Nature for all our resources and for our collective well being. Not only physical clothing, heating and physical shelter .. but we depend on Nature for our psychological/psychic well being. In which, we experience the world around us .. the sky .. clouds .. rain .. mountains, rivers and oceans...

If you type "corn wheat sugar coffee" into search engines you get, commodity trading... What does that tell you? For those of you whose brain freezes over at the mention of economics the basic facts are...

Changing climate, growing populations, loss of food production to increasing urbanization, loss of fresh water, fresh water 'stress', ecological stress, flooding of farmland, extreme drought, tsunami, hurricane and coastal inundation, commodity speculation (affecting prices & farmers) as well as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, extreme weather disruptions and world economic wars, conflicts, every man for himself, political turmoil and toxic waste pollution.

Type "food prices" into the search engines in 2010 and you get, 'new legislation' - 'food price crisis' - 'rising cost of food' - 'food prices soar around the world' - 'rising food prices' .. I wonder why?

As a planet we are blindly heading into a chaotic and inhuman crisis in the supply of basic foods. We are intelligent enough to avoid this. We do not have to even have this 'crisis' - while in France alpha male workers burn toxic rubber tires in 'protests' - polluting the fragile atmosphere of the planet that gives all of us life fighting dense lead-headed politicians dither around in circles with no skills other than that they are career politicians who desire 'power'. The males only seem to want to FIGHT.

It is like the blind-leading-the-blind-leading-the-blind.

Wheat is slowly grinding higher on dryness fears in the winter wheat growing areas here in the US. The entire grain complex continues to experience supply concerns which is working to push food prices inexorably higher, notwithstanding the load of BS being dished out by the official government agencies that tell us food inflation is tame. I guess they think that we are too damn dumb to believe our own eyes. Corn is slowly closing in on the $6.00 mark while wheat is back above $7.00. Soybeans are over $12.

If that were not enough, Sugar is now up near $0.30 pound, an incredible price. Coffee, while weaker today, is at levels last seen in September 1997! Nope – no rising food costs anywhere in sight...

If I can (on this Blog) with no financial resources and no financial research income - FOR FREE - research this essential information ... and I have NO RESOURCES ... THEN why can the RICH Governements etc and so on ... not access the same information? With all those trillions and billions of tax-payers dollars and euros?

Around the planet... global tax dollars pay for the ILLEGALisation of HEMP production, HEMP research and local HEMP fiber production alternatives to COTTON [for example]. But there is much much more .. as a planetary society we do not have to be taking this disasterous route. We are not a "Global Society" we are a "Planetary Society", because what goes with the PLANET goes with US.

China's Cotton Dragon Vs World Hemp Dragon

Sometimes when you pause and look at something in a new way, how you respond to a problem changes. If you go against the 'trend' and you look at a thing backwards, it changes not only your perspective; but it changes how you see your way ahead.

One example of this is the currency revaluation / devaluation we want to sell in your markets hysteria .. when the real concern is a countries PURCHASING POWER. That is one example of looking at a problem backwards. All eyes are on 'exports' .. for example, China's exporting power .. when in reality those exports come FROM SOMEWHERE .. they come from resources.

When I look backwards at the current hysteria around currencies .. I see BUYING POWER .. a country has the power to buy cotton. That is one example of buying power that translates into production and exports = a countries wealth.

Part of buying power is also about STRATEGY, and China's advantage over the rest of the world is that they have a national strategy. There is no 'invisible hand' of the market .. they know what they are doing.

Oct. 14 Bloomberg -- Cotton futures climbed to a record on signs that China, the world’s largest user and buyer, may boost imports to meet demand from textile makers.

Commodity speculation can makes prices fluctuate (in my opinion bringing instability into the market), but speculation is (in my view) the shadow cast by large movements of resources, catching the beady eye of futures traders.

As the U.S. Dollar fell to an all-time low commodity buying sprees can send prices soaring, as many commodities traded on the open market are priced in the U.S. Dollar. But this type of speculation obscures the undervalued world of real resource trades.

Why would you buy a cotton T-shirt or cotton jeans? Because someone makes it and sells it to you. Why would textile producers buy cotton? Because you will buy their products. I do not agree with the theory that, demand fuels supply. Because if Hemp jeans were on the market I am sure the demand would be just as high. So, where are the Hemp jeans?

This is what I mean about looking at an issue backwards .. you can often end up looking at the future and seeing the outcome when you understand 'seed-prices', flooding, export restrictions, damaged crops, lack of water and last of all 'demand'.

Then you have special interest conflicts where, for example, India regulate cotton exports in an attempt to protect its own textile producers from high raw cotton prices. A high world market demand for raw cotton pushes prices to an all time high at a time when Indian cotton farmers have produced a bumper harvest. However, the Indian government’s policy to regulate cotton exports for the domestic textile industry, means that Indian farmers face heavy losses as a result of deferment of cotton exports.

Looking backwards at an approaching world crisis in production and supply, changes how you deal with that problem. For example, rather than politicians and bankers arguing over who floats or suppresses the value of their currencies the action would be to implement a realistic move on the world market chessboard.

As institutionalised observers tear their hair out over China's revaluation of their currencies purchasing power, not a tweet is heard about Germany, whose exporting engine power has a currency value higher than the European Euro value shared by many European countries all in one pot. °>)

China are not only buying cotton to fire up their textile production into 2011, but they are also planning long term production of hemp fibers while the rest of the world argues about currency manipulations. It seems as though the West has become merely a consumer-of-goods as the East becomes mainly a producer of goods.

The artificial suppression of the use of hemp-fibers other than in China and Canada is also a form of currency manipulation. Political interests stop farmers growing hemp fibers locally, therefore artificially suppressing the supply of hemp fibers to potential local producers. Destroying 'demand' and the potential for increasing local and national demand of home produced textiles. Not only textiles .. as hemp fibers can be used in building, insulation, plastics, cordage, textiles, fabric, compressed hardboard, flooring, car manufacture, paper, food, oil, fuel etc and so on ..

You can sit and do nothing but write laws and consume the products of emerging nations or you can get up off you '-)s and produce something yourself .. as the most optimistic outlook will be that the World's hemp dragon will save the world from future crop crisis, weather anomalies, export restrictions, trade wars and intellectual arguments.

Let the intellectuals sit around and argue .. let the political alpha-dogs beat their chests and howl at the moon .. but for the rest of us .. we have to get something done and we have to do it soon. It does not matter what state the world is in, planting hemp and supplying local fabric textiles will ease the pain. Oh! Hemp can be used for bandages too!

This is not just about 'medical marijuana', this plant can save trees by providing paper. Trees take such a long time to grow and to grow healthy trees requires a lot of water .. Hemp can grow in drought plains and the plant does not take a long time to grow. We seriously have to stop using trees for paper.

Hemp fibers can replace and reduce the demand for Cotton [a plant that just sucks water and requires massive chemical/pesticide drama - polluting the environment and destructuring the soil] .. and the West diddle away while CHINA grows and produces Hemp fibers and Hemp cloth ..

Is Hemp illegal because it is a plant that would increase local autonomy, decrease dependance on central producers and having boosted local production would destroy the Global Centralization of resources and production? I think that is a good question!

2010 - Where Food Is Food & Not An Investment

So, now it begins .. August 2010 .. President Vladimir Putin has banned Russian grain exports, as the drought cuts into grain crop yields. Exports of Russian wheat, barley, rye, corn and flour have all been banned, by the worlds third biggest wheat producer.

I am beginning to realize 2010 is a crucial turning-point for mankind. In the not-too-distant market speculation on food futures .. food resource speculation will be viewed as criminal activity (a crime against humanity). This is a volatile time for the human race. 2010 is only the beginning of a 're-education' as to what is really valuable, what is really necessary and what is correct and honourable behaviour.

The rules are very simple to understand: you need air to breathe, water to drink and food to eat .. then you need a shelter and you need to keep warm - or if temperatures are really high you need to keep cool. Then you need to be able to grow and secure your own food supply.

Key words over the next ten to twenty years will be: Water, food supply, farmers, dam deconstruction, organic growers, co-operation, local-food, sharing, renewal, irrigation, permaculture, earth houses, hemp, innovation.

The most important issue to be resolved is the speculation on food prices, played though the global bank/hedge-fund Casino, where to make a profit on essential-to-life resources is as unacceptable as the Gulf-of-Mexico oil disaster.

Recently, the Guardian reported on the garlic gold rush in China, where garlic became the best performing commodity. What does that mean? It means that a basic food substance becomes a 'price-speculation' Casino, where tons of garlic are hoarded in warehouses to push up the value for SPECULATORS. I predict this kind of activity will become illegal across the world in the next few years.

The next level will be overall 'Food Speculation' where hedge-funds, banks and commodity traders send the price of food skyrocketing or diving into the depths of poverty (for the farmers) #*# .. and without a doubt this is going to be stopped. Starvation Casino will fortunately not be our future .. because if we were to navigate in that direction .. it would be one of the most catastrophic paths we could take '-)

I don't think we are going to take that path .. it may be that some of you may waken out of dreams where you see yourself in another parallel Earth dimension, where the physical architecture is different or the situation you see around you is different .. perhaps oppressive or can be amazing.

I feel, that when such dreams occur, we are entering other worlds connected to our soul. In other words, you inspire your lowest most trapped self (in parallel Earth dimensions), just as your most highest self inspires you.

If you were to imagine you are an indigo-blue orgone-orb inhabiting this Earth dimension, with your day to day bio-operating-system connection to this level of existence on this plane. What factor changes the dynamics of your soul-connection existence allowing you to transform within the parameters of this incarnation? The factor is 'you' - whoever you are. The problem is this is not a though-based operating system dynamic. In reality, you are all orbs within the parameters of your soul. [It's in the picture]

Don't get me wrong .. I found this by 'accident' and I had no idea that the picture would show me what I had already experienced in my dreams. I am not in any way connected to the WingMakers on an Earth Internet level '-)

So what does this have to do with floods, grain harvests, food production, population, natural disasters, speculation and why we are here on Earth? Your bubble bursts and you get onto the other side .. and that is where the fun starts!

All aspects of who we are on a soul level expand across all dimensions of time and space, and the core essence of the soul knows who we are .. from the highest to the most petty actions (behaviour). This cannot be falsified. On the soul level, we know who we are. So, the relationship is: "know yourself". Your relationship is with yourself.

It does not matter if you waken up here or on a lower world dimension vibration .. In the end it is all ONE.

The intrusion into and the destruction of the world's forests are the result of quick and easy removal of local resources to feed an expanding and parasitic global need for resources. Humans extend their need into the surviving forests, and extract the living and essential resources - creating a 'desert'. We then build new structures on this desert while the towns and cities fall into decay behind us.

All across the world, people with the means want to move out of the pollution and the decay of aging cities and relocate to unexploited areas. The rapid growth of relocating and immigrant populations create the same problems in the unexploited areas, eventually turning those areas into dirty towns and cities...

The solution to these severe environmental problems is to turn around and face them, not to take the 'cheap option' of exploiting new tracts of unexploited land. The cheaper option of extending our needs into remaining forests and natural tracts of land is actually, in the long run, the more costly option. If we would turn around and face the monster we have created, kill it and create environmentally sound living areas - then we would also be creating economically sound relationships with nature.

I like Catherine Austin Fitts' 'Tapeworm Economics' model... "If we want clean water, fresh food, a sound financial system, and healthy communities, we are going to have to finance and govern these resources ourselves. That means withdrawing our support from the institutions that are draining us."

In my own view, local investment in sustainable solutions is vital to facing this environmental monster intelligent people are now fleeing from... That investment is going to have to come from the grassroots solutions of the local people in the local communities. There is a treasure of information on the Solari.com website. If you take time to study the information on Solari.com, the most important consideration is, who constitute the atoms of the parasitic economic matrix? There are a lot of 'Conspiracy Theories' about ruling elites manipulating and controlling the lives of 'ordinary human beings'. The conspiracy theories mostly draw the involvement of the ordinary matrix individual as that of a victim. Very few people step back a little further and perceive that the Matrix, or the Ecomomic Matrix is made of all the individual decisions of the 'ordinary' people on the planet.

One of the few people who navigated through the collective fog to point out to people that "We are the world," was Jiddu Krishnamurti. The same applies to environment, economics and society. The physical material atoms of human culture is us, and the structure of those atoms is our behaviour. A more accurate conspiracy theory as to why our world functions in the way it does is that it does so because of us. The economic behaviour of the masses creates the environmental monster that is currently destroying our planet.

A lot of people may say they don't really care about that. This lack of concern is the behaviour of the current matrix in terms of greed, desire for more, patterns of consumption: the economic behaviour that is destroying our world and our environment. The structure of the matrix is all of us together. The way we all interact with our world sends a signal similar to the behaviour of electrons orbiting an atom. Caring individuals would create a totally different signal, a totally different economic behaviour and a totally different relationship with our world. The monster the conspiracy theorists love to describe is us, we are that monster and we maintain the atomic structure of its cancerous growth through how we think and how we live our lives.

The Planet's Plant

It requires no pesticides and no fertilisers. It requires less water than other crops. It grows in 70 to 110 days. It uses minimal nutrients from the soil and it makes a stronger paper, cloth or canvas than the wood from trees. The oils can be made into bio-degradable plastic. The plant provides 1,500 pounds per acre (cotton produces 500 pounds per acre). It is the oldest cultivated fiber plant in the world. One acre can produce as much fiber as four acres of trees. It's paper is longer lasting and is acid and chlorine free. The plants roots break up hard pan soils. It's particle board products are stronger than wood. Straw from the plant does not grow mold spores. There are more than 25,000 practical uses from the plant. It produces ten times more methanol than corn. It burns clean and sulphur free. Hemp seed protein more closely resembles that of the human body than soy; it is also easier to digest. Hemp contains a richer source of essential fatty acid oils than soy. These oils prevent heart disease and build the immune system. Hemp also resists UV-B light, which is a kind of sunlight that is blocked by the ozone layer.

Soy beans do not take UV-B light very well. If the ozone layer were to deplete by 16%, which by some estimates is very possible, soy production would fall by 25-30%.

EarthShips: Building The Future

One very important aspect of the Earthship Concept is to be available to the masses. That is to say, it cannot be a multi-million dollar vessel that only the rich can afford. Everyone is entitled to voyage into the future. The concept, design, and actual method of manifestation of an Earthship must be developed with this in mind. In addition to interfacing with natural phenomena, this concept must interface with the nature of the common person.

What is an Earthship?
The Earthship is an independent globally oriented dwelling unit made from materials that are indigenous to the entire planet. The major structural building component of the Earthship is recycled automobile tires filled with compacted earth to form a rammed earth brick encased in steel belted rubber. This brick and the resulting bearing walls it forms is virtually indestructible.

The Earthship design is based on the principle of Thermal Mass. The tyres are packed with earth, and then stacked atop each other. The gaps are filled with cement and the structure is skimmed with plaster. The tyres give the structure a solidity and water-resistance an Adobe hut would lack. Thick walls ensure the internal temperature is very stable, says Reynolds. The knock-on effect is that little energy is needed to heat or cool the building, meaning electric power from solar or wind sources is devoted to lighting and powering appliances — of which the most energy-greedy is the fridge.

Integral to the design is that Earthships are south-facing in all but the hottest climates. That gives maximum exposure to the sun, both for warming the house and for solar power. Roofs are designed to catch water rather than run it off. Water is then passed through multiple filtration systems to be used for drinking and washing, then household uses and finally gardening.

Reynolds estimates that if you pay builders, an Earthship cost roughly the same as a conventional house - an average $200,000 in the US. The Low Carbon Trust (which aims to be the first stop for European Earthship enquiries) is hoping to drop the cost to around £80,000 for a three-bedroom house, about £65 per square foot — cheaper than conventional housing. The typical delivery time they expect to be six months said Howarth.

Each tyre takes about 10 minutes of hard, bone-shaking work to fill with rammed earth using a light sledgehammer. To prevent the earth spilling, the bottom of the tyre is lined with cardboard, another plentiful and free building material. This design is built around a double U-shape which maximises the frontage exposed to direct sunlight and the space available for solar panels.

The team from Taos pound the earth with practised grunts while the paying guests mill around and take occasional stabs at work. But by the end of the second day a rhythm has settled and the outline shape of the whole building had emerged.

The final seminar was spent on water management, perhaps the most intricate part of the process, and the least understood. Solar energy solutions are now widespread. Rainwater management is under-used and brings its proponents into direct contact with health and safety standards.

Water collection starts with the roof, and Reynolds recommends an enamelled metal roof as the most economical, durable and drinkable solution. Rainwater is collected into a tank, and from there passes through several filters to ready it for drinking and bathing. First-use water runs off from the shower or sink and is then recycled to the toilet. From there the water proceeds through another filter and into the garden. Reynolds showed us photos of his Taos set-up with banana trees fed entirely from third-use water.

As land gets scarcer in the UK; as technologies improve, allowing us to work and communicate without mains electricity or phone-lines, demand for Earthship-style solutions will increase exponentially. Whether planners will allow us to set sail for these futuristic dwellings is another matter.

Seeds of Hope

Folklore or Prophecy?
According to South Indian lore, if you have a pongamia tree in your backyard and sit under it every day, you will receive the nourishment and vitality you need to overcome problems caused by extremes of wind, water, or fire. This bit of folklore may prove to be prophetic. The pongamia tree has the potential for transforming the struggling villages of today into tomorrow’s havens of prosperity and tranquility, and at the same time, restoring their rich heritage of rural self-sufficiency.

With suicide rates among farmers in drought-stricken South India reaching epidemic proportions, a team of humanitarian organizations joined hands with entrepreneurs, scientists, bankers, and village leaders to restore the natural balance of rural life. The result? A creative plan to turn destitute farmers into the architects of a bright future for their communities. This plan, now well on its way to fruition, illustrates the potential for transformation when the seeds of hope are sown in human hearts.

For countless generations rural India ran on the jajmani system in which every family in a village was considered a “client” of all the others. Almost everything the community needed could be produced within the village, and essential goods and services were exchanged without the use of currency. The washermen, for example, collected and laundered the clothes of the entire village, and, in return, collected pots from the potters, rope from the ropemakers, and vegetables and grain from the farmers; the barbers cut their hair, and the tailors made their clothes.

This natural interdependence ensured that the basic necessities were available to everyone, and that nothing was wasted. The owner of a field harvested only what he needed, and when he declared himself finished with his harvest, the other villagers could come and take what remained. When the harvest was complete, anyone could turn their livestock out to graze in the fields. The same attitude applied to fruit trees. It was understood that only the landowner was entitled to pick the fruit, but anyone—even a passing stranger—was entitled to fruit that had fallen.

The jajmani system created a stable economy, for everyone understood that if any segment of the community struggled, everyone would suffer. As a result, social and economic interrelationships were carefully nurtured to maintain the health of the village and the land that supported it. And because farmers provided the nourishment needed to sustain life, they occupied a central role in this time-honored system.

As the plight of the villagers worsened throughout the 1990s, scientists from various disciplines began to look for new ways to foster sustainable rural development. A group at the Indian Institute of Sciences in Bangalore had been researching these strategies for more than thirty years. In the late 1990s they were searching for ways to bring electricity to run irrigation pumps to remote drought-stricken areas. One day, as they were discussing the possibilities with some villagers, their eyes fell on the large trees that formed hedges and boundary markers around the parched fields. Despite the persistent drought, the trees were flourishing.

These were pongamia trees. Mature specimens of pongamia pinnata stand up to 50 feet high, and their dense canopy can be almost equally wide. They sport hearty, dark-green leaves that retain moisture even under intense heat. Small clusters of white, purple, and pink flowers blossom on their branches throughout the year, maturing into brown seed pods that litter the ground. The pods are so tough that even goats ignore them. Other than firewood, the only known use for the pongamia trees was to provide shade.

But as much as they appreciated the shade, it was the seeds that held the researchers’ attention. They knew that before the introduction of kerosene lanterns, pongamia seeds had been a source of lamp oil. This gave them an idea. Back in their laboratory, they found that with minimal refinement pongamia oil could also be used to fuel diesel engines.

This discovery addressed one of the most pressing needs of rural villages—the ever-growing demand for energy. Instead of importing petroleum diesel fuel to run their irrigation pumps and to power the generators that are the main source of electricity in remote areas, the villagers could switch to a locally available, affordable fuel. With further processing, pongamia seed oil can also be used to run heavy machinery and tractors—even to fuel cars and trucks.

Since the late 1990s, members of the Himalayan Institute’s South India Chapter had been concerned by the calamity facing the villagers. Under the leadership of Anil Reddy, the Institute had been working to provide basic medical and counseling services, as well as some small-scale employment opportunities in the form of organic farming projects in some villages. As helpful as these efforts were, it was clear that they were only short-term solutions. What the villagers really needed was a sustainable way to earn their living and a means of renewing their self-confidence and their traditional community bonds.

Searching for a way to bring this about, Reddy and his colleagues investigated dozens of rural development strategies. Pongamia was the most promising. For one thing, the tree is well suited to the intense heat and sunlight of South India. For another, its dense network of lateral roots and its thick, long taproot make it drought-resistant. The tree can even help rehabilitate the land—the dense shade it provides slows the evaporation of surface water and its root structures promote nitrogen fixation, which moves nutrients from the air into the soil. And once established, the pongamia can give a reliable harvest of seeds for fifty years.

After meeting with the researchers from the Indian Institute of Sciences and conducting additional research, Reddy knew he had found what he was looking for—a way to restore the self-reliance and economic self-sufficiency that had once been the hallmark of village life. Pongamia could form the basis of a self-sustaining agricultural platform that would breathe new life into the villages. Using pongamia oil to run irrigation pumps and generators would stem some of the outflow of village resources, but that was only the beginning.

In addition to biofuel, pongamia provides other resources vital to a farming community. The seedcake remaining after pressing the oil can be used as cattle feed; crops can be treated with organic pesticides from the seed pod; kitchen stoves can run on methane biogas made by fermenting the seed cake; and the waste pulp from the fermented seedcake can be used as an organic fertilizer (see sidebar). The potential was tremendous. And best of all, planting and cultivating the tree would require the labor of many villagers. Not only would this provide a steady income, but they would have to learn to rely on each other and share resources if the enterprise was to blossom. With millions of acres of farmland lying barren and unused, this tree could breathe new life into the villages of Andhra Pradesh.

After experimenting with a small pilot project to test the feasibility of the idea and to iron out the glitches, the Himalayan Institute launched its Biofuel Rural Development Initiative in 2003 in collaboration with two other organizations: Rahul Medical Society and Roshini Biotech. The ultimate goal of this project is to develop the full potential of the pongamia tree to bring about a widespread and lasting renewal throughout the region’s rural villages. But for this to happen, Reddy and his colleagues knew that they would first need to rekindle the villagers’ capacity for hope. Poverty and failure had so demoralized the farmers that they no longer believed in themselves. They needed to see there was an alternative to endless poverty, an alternative that would not just help them get by for another day or another week, but that would enable them, their families, and their community to build a healthy, more prosperous life. For this project to succeed on a grand scale, the impetus would have to come from the farmers themselves.

The Institute began by launching a massive public awareness and education campaign. It sent teams from village to village. They erected tents and provided cool lemon drinks and other refreshments; they listened to the villagers talk about their failing crops, the problems caused by the high-interest moneylenders, and their anxieties about the future. Then, team members offered a solution: grow pongamia trees as a crop. It was a radical idea—cultivating a common shade tree as a cash crop. But the team members assured the farmers that they had buyers for all the tough, brown seed pods these trees could produce.

The villagers were amazed to hear that they could grow pongamia on land they had considered useless. Rocky, hilly parcels were perfectly suitable for the tree. This allayed the farmers’ fears of gambling on an unknown crop—they realized they could cultivate pongamia on their marginal land while continuing to grow traditional crops on their most fertile acreage. And they were surprised to hear that the water required for four acres of crops such as rice or millet could support up to 150 acres of pongamia. Villagers also learned about crops that grow especially well in the vicinity of pongamia. For example, one of the more unusual characteristics of the tree is its capacity to attract and withstand insects that weaken and kill other plants. These pests restrict themselves to the pongamia and ignore more delicate plants, such as the cotton or groundnut. With the cooperation of the village councils, the word began to spread, and soon thousands were flocking to local meetings to learn about this promising new project.

The idea began to take hold, and when a significant number of farmers were ready to try it, the Institute set up workshops to teach the fundamental skills: how to irrigate and care for the seedlings during the crucial first few years, how to prune the growing trees, and how to graft the plants.

Grafting is necessary because it can take as long as ten years for a tree in the wild to reach full seed-bearing maturity. Even when it finally matures, there is no guarantee the tree will consistently produce a good harvest. If they were to grow pongamia successfully, the villagers needed simple, effective, and inexpensive ways to overcome these limitations.

In Roshini Biotech’s Hyderabad laboratory and on expansive test plots, researchers had developed standardized techniques for growing pongamia on a large scale. They found that to guarantee a consistently high yield, a stem, or scion, from a tree with a demonstrated capacity to produce many seeds had to be grafted onto an existing pongamia rootstock. So they studied thousands of pongamia variants, identifying and collecting the best sources of high-quality grafting stock. This not only removed the uncertainty from the yield, it also reduced the time to harvest from ten years to as little as three. In addition to scions from reliable trees, the villagers would need rootstocks for grafting, so Roshini Biotech established large nurseries to provide a steady supply.

Once the villagers had mastered the planting, grafting, and irrigation techniques, they were ready to begin. Roshini Biotech and the Himalayan Institute organized the villagers into groups and helped them qualify for low-interest loans so they could undertake the project. Roshini Biotech’s research nurseries supplied the seedlings and grafting materials. The company also served as the focal point for ensuring there is enough water available to irrigate the young trees. The federal government offered subsidy grants in the form of rice so the farmers and their families would not go hungry during the start-up phase. This was instrumental in persuading the farmers to commit acreage to the pongamia project because the rice subsidy amounted to approximately 300 kg per acre—more rice than can be grown on an acre of land in the region in a bad year.

As the farmers worked their fields, Reddy and his associates turned their attention to organizing and coordinating cooperative efforts. It is said that it takes a village to raise a child. It also takes a village to raise pongamia. Years of mistrust and hard times had strained the traditional bonds of fellowship that hold rural communities together. Now it was time to renew them.

Recognizing that the Himalayan Institute had made a long-term commitment to helping, the villagers joined hands to work as one to ensure their collective efforts would bear fruit. Starting with the village councils, cooperation at a grassroots level was established. Land that had once been fragmented into tiny plots and farmed by the individual owners was planted in pongamia and tended collectively. Farmers worked together to plant seedlings on land owned by the village and shared the responsibility for tending the young trees.

Another example of this newfound cooperation was the development of a community-based irrigation system. Villagers began to share the responsibility for collecting and distributing precious irrigation water. By overcoming their urge to grasp tightly to what little they had, and instead working together for the common good, the villagers took a huge step in restoring the trusting relationships which once defined their way of life.

What began in 2003 as a pilot project involving a few thousand families and 10,000 acres of pongamia trees has mushroomed. Today, more than 40,000 families are cultivating more than 100,000 acres of pongamia. Resilient green saplings are rising from dusty red fields, transforming the landscape around hundreds of villages. Yet, the fruit of this project goes far deeper than income generation and alternative energy, for it has touched the hearts of these villagers. For them, the pongamia tree is producing seeds of hope.

One Seed, Many Products
As people around the world are rediscovering, vegetable oils can be used to supplement or even replace traditional petroleum fuels. Though its raw oil can be used in stationary generators, pongamia oil, like all vegetable oils, needs additional processing known as transesterification to be used to power motorized vehicles. This involves heating unrefined oil and agitating it with a catalyst for a few hours to separate the pure vegetable oil from other constituents, such as glycerol. This transforms 90 percent of the dark-brown unrefined oil into a light-yellow liquid that can properly be called biodiesel. The glycerol in the remaining 10 percent has a wide range of applications, including use in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. In fact, almost every step in the life cycle of pongamia seeds results in a safe and useful product.

Once the oil has been extracted from the seeds, the remaining seedcake can be mixed with water and placed in an airtight environment where it ferments, producing a flammable gas and a slurry, which is a safe and highly effective organic fertilizer. The gas can be compressed and stored in small tanks for use as cooking fuel. (Biogas burns far cleaner than wood or cow dung, the traditional cooking fuels, and so causes fewer respiratory disorders.) Widespread use of gas for cooking could also help curb the rampant deforestation common to areas where wood is used as a primary fuel.

The seedcake has other uses as well. The toxic compounds that make pongamia seeds repellent to grazing livestock can be extracted to create a potent natural pesticide. And once these toxins are removed, the seedcake makes a cattle feed that is rich in amino acids.

Transforming Ourselves and the World Around Us
The goal of spiritual practice is to seek the intrinsic divinity within ourselves and to experience its richness in every facet of our lives. It is this process of transformation—within and without—that is the heart of yoga.

The practice of yoga leads us to see the outer world as a reflection of the divinity within. And as we do, we see that the divinity shining in our own hearts shines in all living beings. When this realization dawns, we experience joy and fulfillment in serving others, and selfless service becomes an integral part of our spiritual practice. This is why all great spiritual organizations involve themselves in humanitarian work.
