Growing Future Soil: Hemp & Mycelium

Not only months of study and observation .. but years of study and observation .. perhaps guided by our ancestors .. revealed a vision of a future world, a future soil and man's future relationship with the earth under his feet.

Seeds of The Future
On October 8, 2012 .. only three media sites covered "news" that will transform the world. It's no big deal .. a small stream high in the mountains is the source of some of the largest rivers in the world. By the time the waters reach the lowlands, the river feeds many plants, trees, animals, fish and humans.

Growing Future Soil: Hemp
Hemp can be used as a food rotation crop, enriching the topsoil, increasing the soil's moisture retention .. can purify and clean the soil.
Hemp does not deplete the soil as many other industrial crops do. It actually enriches the soil as it sheds its leaves throughout the growing season, creating a mature compost. This not only enriches the topsoil, but helps it to retain moisture, adding to the fact that hemp requires about half the amount of water that other agricultural crops do. - Hemp Purifies the soil
Hemp can be planted all over the European countryside, increasing local innovation and productivity. At a local level, the dried Hemp stalks can be used to make paper (saving trees), can be pressed into a wood substitute, used as insulation and as a durable building material, woven into cloth, transformed into fuel and used as a chemical cleanup. Growing Future Soil
Soil grows - just like a tree .. like a plant .. like any compound on Earth. Organic compost is one example of "soil growth" .. on the forest floor soil grows. Natural organic soil is alive .. rich in nutrients .. rich in micro-organisms, fungi and a living network of mycelium.

The future of agriculture is the farmer as a steward of the soil, a steward of the land and as a steward of health. Not only the health of humans .. but a steward of the health of plants, fungi, insects, trees, waterways, birds, fish, plankton and the earth itself.

It is not really agri-culture - to cultivate "a field" .. but it is ertho-culture .. to cultivate the earth. A single minded only-for-myself approach to cultivating food (and animals) has led to a worldwide depletion of the Earth's soil.

Few people in the West today would understand the significance of Bhutan deciding to go organic by 2020 .. unless the seed travels in the winds of time to plant the organic seed in other lands by 2050 .. Who knows ??

One day In The Future ...


"Master, how do I talk with the future?" asked the young monk.
"The future is all around you now... " The Buddha replied.

It is true, the future is all around you .. now. The future of mankind does not lie in monetary systems and bank casino gambling operations .. who produce nothing but money. But, the future does exist outside of the tragedy of today's Roman Circus.

For example, your genes are the future. Your DNA is the future. So too, are all the plants, animals, birds, insects and sea creatures. Born from the cosmic dust of the Primordial Universe, you are the stars and the stars are you. There is nowhere to go, other than here now. Nature is all around you and Nature is always THE NOW ... in this moment. Like a heartbeat.

Today, in 2012, we are living in the world of The Metallic Man .. depending on copper, silver, uranium, platinum, mercury, cadmium, zinc and rare earth oxides to power our world and make us strong.

The Sumerians were great travellers and explorers, and are credited with the invention of the world’s first boats. An Akkadian dictionary of Sumerian words was found to contain no less than 105 terms for various types of ship according to their size, destination or cargo. One inscription, unearthed at Lagash, referred to docking facilities for ships and listed the materials which its ruler Gudea had imported to build a temple for his God Ninurta c. 2200 BC.

The range of these materials is astonishing, including gold, silver, copper, diorite, carnelian and cedar wood. In some cases these materials were transported more than a thousand miles.

The first kiln is found also in Sumer. The use of a large oven, or kiln: allowed clay products to be fired, giving them extra tensile strength without contamination by dust or ashes. A similar technology was used to extract metals such as copper from its ore by heating the ore above 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit in a closed, oxygen starved furnace.

This process, called smelting, became necessary at an early stage, when the supply of naturally occurring copper nuggets had been exhausted. Independent studies of early metallurgy have been surprised and baffled at the speed with which the Sumerians became expert in smelting, refining and casting. These advanced technologies were being used within only a few hundred years of the beginning of the Sumerian civilization.

Even more astounding was the Sumerian development of alloying, a process by which different metals are chemically combined in a furnace. Everything we do in our world today depends on the Alchemy of Metals.

Deny human beings access to metallic compounds and we would be living in an entirely different world than the one we live in now. Look around you to appreciate a small fact that most of us overlook every day of our lives.

The metal knives, the blade that prepares our food. The metal cooking pot, the cauldron we use to transform our food. The metal wires that brings energy to the stove (fire) and the metal pipes that brings essential water to wash and cook with. Humans extract oil from the Earth using giant metal drills and they store the oil in giant metal containers transported around the world in giant metal ships. The modern human is nothing without metal.

One day In The Future ...
You may ask: If the future is all around us then how can it change?

To understand this, you have to understand why The Buddha is laughing...

One day in the future plant materials will radically eclipse our use of metals. One example of this will be a breakthrough in plant based Solar Panels. In 2012, Solar Panels mostly rely on silver to generate electricity from the Sun. Silver is used in windows and glass. Silver is used to meet computer and electrical needs/demands. Without silver we humans would have no technological age.

Transitioning through 2080 to 2180 our practical and technological world will be largely plant based. The human race is transitioning to a plant based society/economy. Much of which will be grown in cellular grow-vats. We cannot pull apart the natural world to meet our growing energy and technological needs.

Metal based Solar Panels will never be an effective transformer of sunlight into energy required by human systems. Seaweed and highly efficient plant based technology (chlorophyll) are a far superior medium for the transmutation of light into electricity (photon energy).

Hemp based cellular structures will prove to be one of the most robust and adaptable forms of solar/cellular transformation. Look at the extreme conditions in which Hemp plants can grow. They do not need as much water as other plants and their growth enhances and protects the soil and the environment. A very powerful plant. They are masters of transformation.

The future is all around you now, in the plants, grass and leaves of the trees.

Hemp! Mercedes of Southern Europe!

I don't pretend I can see the future ...
Is Hemp the Mercedes of Southern Europe?

Let's start with Spain and Greece... You see EUROPE is not created out of banks, central banks, governments and Chinese imports! Europe is the on-the-ground co-operation between people living in Europe. It does not matter if they speak French, Spanish, German, English, Italian or Greek. It also does not matter what currency they use, because the ultimate currency is "trade" .. which means exchange.

1. Any resource (not banks) is an "economy"
2. Bankers deal in other peoples money (resources)
3. Humans trade resources
E=HR² (Economy equals Human Resources squared)

Printing debt is not going to bring Southern Europe out of a recession.

HEMP is the Mercedes of plants. You take Industrial hemp and you grow it all around Southern Europe. Local producers turn the hemp fibers into many different resources used by humans. You can make fabric for clothing, bedding, insulation materials. You can make paper using hemp fibers. You can make computer covers and electronic main boards out of hemp (that do not heat up when used).

Hemp materials can be used in car production. Hemp fibers can be used to make structured flooring materials. The fibers are an alternative for wood. Compressed hemp can be used to make tables and chairs. Hemp can also be used in all areas of house construction. It can be used as a filter material. The list is endless...

Every country in Europe would benefit from the production of hemp fibers and materials. Europe would be less dependent on imports from China and from the rest of the world. Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal (even France) could become exporters of hemp materials and of hemp products.

Once you've got that going the Europeans could start planting natural mixed forest trees. Not planting them in straight lines; but planting them like a natural forest. In fifty years all of Europe could receive benefits from those trees, as well as altering the climate to the benefit of all.

Climate Change? C0² ???

Climate change began (in modern times) with the Romans cutting down the great forest that covered most of Northern and Southern Europe. All we have done in the last two hundred years is to accelerate the destruction of the forests all over the entire world.

Therefore, a carbon tax is not going to benefit the climate - planting trees will!

It is really very simple .. you have hemp growing everywhere all over Europe together with the planting of natural forests. Let's call it the "Greening of Europe". There you have your natural production all over the land that people can use as a "resource" whether those people have money or not.

In other words .. when you have wealth .. let's say sixty to seventy percent are producing wealth of resources. Then you can allow those who do not have such a great amount of wealth to use resources to support themselves (like hemp growing wild or growing all over the town). Because hemp will save you and save your children's children, by saving the planet '-)

China's Cotton Dragon Vs World Hemp Dragon

Sometimes when you pause and look at something in a new way, how you respond to a problem changes. If you go against the 'trend' and you look at a thing backwards, it changes not only your perspective; but it changes how you see your way ahead.

One example of this is the currency revaluation / devaluation we want to sell in your markets hysteria .. when the real concern is a countries PURCHASING POWER. That is one example of looking at a problem backwards. All eyes are on 'exports' .. for example, China's exporting power .. when in reality those exports come FROM SOMEWHERE .. they come from resources.

When I look backwards at the current hysteria around currencies .. I see BUYING POWER .. a country has the power to buy cotton. That is one example of buying power that translates into production and exports = a countries wealth.

Part of buying power is also about STRATEGY, and China's advantage over the rest of the world is that they have a national strategy. There is no 'invisible hand' of the market .. they know what they are doing.

Oct. 14 Bloomberg -- Cotton futures climbed to a record on signs that China, the world’s largest user and buyer, may boost imports to meet demand from textile makers.

Commodity speculation can makes prices fluctuate (in my opinion bringing instability into the market), but speculation is (in my view) the shadow cast by large movements of resources, catching the beady eye of futures traders.

As the U.S. Dollar fell to an all-time low commodity buying sprees can send prices soaring, as many commodities traded on the open market are priced in the U.S. Dollar. But this type of speculation obscures the undervalued world of real resource trades.

Why would you buy a cotton T-shirt or cotton jeans? Because someone makes it and sells it to you. Why would textile producers buy cotton? Because you will buy their products. I do not agree with the theory that, demand fuels supply. Because if Hemp jeans were on the market I am sure the demand would be just as high. So, where are the Hemp jeans?

This is what I mean about looking at an issue backwards .. you can often end up looking at the future and seeing the outcome when you understand 'seed-prices', flooding, export restrictions, damaged crops, lack of water and last of all 'demand'.

Then you have special interest conflicts where, for example, India regulate cotton exports in an attempt to protect its own textile producers from high raw cotton prices. A high world market demand for raw cotton pushes prices to an all time high at a time when Indian cotton farmers have produced a bumper harvest. However, the Indian government’s policy to regulate cotton exports for the domestic textile industry, means that Indian farmers face heavy losses as a result of deferment of cotton exports.

Looking backwards at an approaching world crisis in production and supply, changes how you deal with that problem. For example, rather than politicians and bankers arguing over who floats or suppresses the value of their currencies the action would be to implement a realistic move on the world market chessboard.

As institutionalised observers tear their hair out over China's revaluation of their currencies purchasing power, not a tweet is heard about Germany, whose exporting engine power has a currency value higher than the European Euro value shared by many European countries all in one pot. °>)

China are not only buying cotton to fire up their textile production into 2011, but they are also planning long term production of hemp fibers while the rest of the world argues about currency manipulations. It seems as though the West has become merely a consumer-of-goods as the East becomes mainly a producer of goods.

The artificial suppression of the use of hemp-fibers other than in China and Canada is also a form of currency manipulation. Political interests stop farmers growing hemp fibers locally, therefore artificially suppressing the supply of hemp fibers to potential local producers. Destroying 'demand' and the potential for increasing local and national demand of home produced textiles. Not only textiles .. as hemp fibers can be used in building, insulation, plastics, cordage, textiles, fabric, compressed hardboard, flooring, car manufacture, paper, food, oil, fuel etc and so on ..

You can sit and do nothing but write laws and consume the products of emerging nations or you can get up off you '-)s and produce something yourself .. as the most optimistic outlook will be that the World's hemp dragon will save the world from future crop crisis, weather anomalies, export restrictions, trade wars and intellectual arguments.

Let the intellectuals sit around and argue .. let the political alpha-dogs beat their chests and howl at the moon .. but for the rest of us .. we have to get something done and we have to do it soon. It does not matter what state the world is in, planting hemp and supplying local fabric textiles will ease the pain. Oh! Hemp can be used for bandages too!

Nature's Marijuana Sets Out To Save California

06 October 2010 Hot News .. Nature's Marijuana - often working under the pseudonym Cannabis - will attempt to save California from 'bankruptcy' by healing the states debt problem. Hundreds, if not thousands of Californian taxpayers .. [they gave us the Beach Boys] .. added for 'backup vibes °>)

.. are preparing to give a needed boost to the Californian States tax budget ..

The Planet's Plant has been serving mankind for thousands of years, throughout Earth's history, providing mankind with its fibers as well as healing substances as yet unknown and un-researched by modern science.

Marijuana is one of the oldest cultivated plants forming one of the oldest historical relationships with man, giving fibers for cloth, building, insulation, paper, rope and twine, .. Hemp is the name of the soft, durable fibre that is cultivated from plants of the Cannabis genus.

This is not just about 'medical marijuana', this plant can save trees by providing paper. Trees take such a long time to grow and to grow healthy trees requires a lot of water .. Hemp can grow in drought plains and the plant does not take a long time to grow. We seriously have to stop using trees for paper.

Hemp fibers can replace and reduce the demand for Cotton [a plant that just sucks water and requires massive chemical/pesticide drama - polluting the environment and destructuring the soil] .. and the West diddle away while CHINA grows and produces Hemp fibers and Hemp cloth ..

China: Hemp to increase farmers' income

Is Hemp illegal because it is a plant that would increase local autonomy, decrease dependance on central producers and having boosted local production would destroy the Global Centralization of resources and production? I think that is a good question!

Will Marijuana Save California?

Legalise it - grow it - tax it... Will California's green gold save the state from it's financial woes? The people of Oakland California sure think so. California faces a massive budget crisis and politicians see the marijuana tax as a way to raise revenue. The voters obviously agree with them.

Residents of Oakland California made the first step in approving State taxation for Marijuana. Supporting the move over 80 percent of voters backed proposals for a tax on medical Marijuana. Los Angeles City Council proposed a medical marijuana tax earlier this month, and the cities of Berkeley and San Francisco may consider similar legislation.

Proponents of legalizing Marijuana have argued that alcohol is a "legal drug" whose unrestricted use and abuse cause premature deaths, disease and injuries. Today, 1 in 25 deaths can be attributed to alcohol. Similarly, deaths from smoking tobacco are also a cause for argument with chronic disease and 1 in 5 deaths now related to smoking cigarettes.

Can Marijuana heal the world?
The difference between Hemp/Marijuana, tobacco and alcohol is that "The Leaf" is a medicine, not a drug. This may be why drug companies are afraid of it. The healing compounds in the leaf are for free, you cannot register a patent on those compounds. Most of the healing power in Marijuana has not been researched, due to the plants "demonic status" worldwide.

However, evidence is growing that Medical Cannabis can and does heal a wide variety of ailments, relieving pain or even reducing tumour growth in lung cancer. Where most "social drugs" such as alcohol, heroin, cocaine and nicotine suppress the growth of new brain cells, a Canadian study shows Marijuana promotes neuron growth.

Legislation to legalise marijuana sparks heated debate as state seeks to fill its revenue pot... A California state assemblyman from San Francisco has introduced legislation that would legalise and tax marijuana, a move he hopes will help shore up the state's dire finances.

The bill by San Francisco representative Tom Ammiano, would legalise the cultivation, possession and sale of marijuana by people 21 and older. It would charge growers and wholesalers a $5,000 (£3,400) initial franchise fee and a $2,500 annual renewal fee, and would levy a $50 per ounce fee on retailers.

The law, which would make California the first state to legalise marijuana, would inject an estimated $13bn a year in revenue into California's empty coffers. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on Friday signed a $130bn budget that raises sales and income taxes, and dramatically slashes spending. States across the country are facing massive revenue shortfalls, as income and real estate tax receipts fall and outlays for unemployment insurance and health coverage rise.

"It is simply nonsensical that California's largest agricultural industry is completely unregulated and untaxed," Marijuana Policy Project California policy director Aaron Smith said at a news conference announcing the bill. "With our state in an ongoing fiscal crisis — and no one believes the new budget is the end of California's financial woes — it's time to bring this major piece of our economy into the light of day." Survival Miracle Plants - A New Paradigm

When you look into the future, you see a lot of things that the current paradigm wont like nor understand. This is because - when you genuinely see the real timeline vector (because there are a number of potential timeline shaping alternative futures) - the vision is beyond all conditioning of the linear cave dweller mind.

Those able to listen to the messages from the future, are often called visionaries, when (in reality) they are simply bridging the worlds. In some way the ability is similar to migratory birds, who are able to fly from one continent to another and know where they are going.

In the not too distant future, people on earth are peacefully cultivating hemp and cannabis [essential survival foods]. The message they are sending back to us is that this miracle plant is the source of essential new medicines, is used as a highly nutritional food, provides fiber, is being converted into plastics, is being used as a bio-mass, decontaminates water, can be used as a waste-filter to protect groundwater, is being used as building material, is a vital UV filter, conducts electrical signals, is non-inflammable and can be used to source heat to zero. Plus a few things we are not yet ready to understand...

Demonised as a drug by polarised secular commercial-political institutions, the essential survival qualities of the hemp and cannabis plants float outside of the current research/application paradigm, when [in reality] these plants offer mankind a powerful bridge to cross into the realms of Cosmic brotherhood. I say brotherhood, because the alternative timelines utilising this resource are feminine and highly advanced - unlike the current male-conflict worldwide struggle dragging all of nature down as mankind swims into the pit of hate, fear, anger, pettiness and jealousy.

Long associated, in the ancient world, with illumination and mystery - the cannabis plant directly challenges the human control paradigm where a faction of its own kind sought/seeks to be worshipped and needed by the confused mass. In this equation Need eclipses all power struggles. You essentially have an immature entity/faction desiring adoration.

When any elite is needed [=to control] by confused uneducated masses, the adoration is ... worthless. When a dominant race has to dumb down racial or planetary intelligence to be the dominant force on the planet, what does this say for the intelligence of the elite? Just stop and think about that for a moment.

In a way, the coming struggle will take the form of a dependant elite suffering - as humanity rediscovers its ethno-biological relationship with cosmos, as well as with the true power on earth -- the planet itself.

Marijuana Dealers Offer State of California One Billion Dollars
A coalition of California marijuana growers and dealers has offered Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger one billion dollars to solve the current state budget crisis. The group, calling itself Let Us Pay Taxes, makes the offer through its web site LetUsPayTaxes.com. The offer comes at a time when the California legislature is deadlocked on a new budget and California has stopped issuing checks for vitally needed social services. Legislators are currently arguing over which programs will be cut in order to balance the budget.

"It is ridiculous that California can't pay its bills," said spokesman Clifford Schaffer. "It is a tragedy that they will cut badly needed services and programs such as medical care for the elderly and prison drug treatment when the money to fund all these programs and more is there and available. Everyone who is currently waiting for a check from the state should be enraged at this foolishness."

Regulation and taxation of marijuana could produce six billion dollars in additional tax revenue, according to economic studies linked from LetUsPayTaxes.com. In addition, it could save up to ten billion dollars in enforcement costs. "That is a conservative estimate," said Schaffer. "By other estimates, the revenues could be five times that. The economists are with us all the way on this one. Marijuana prohibition is an economic disaster."

"Let's face reality," Schaffer says. "Marijuana legalization is inevitable. The situation is already beyond control in California. The state and local authorities have offered safe harbor for medical marijuana use and the Federal Government simply doesn't have the resources for effective control."

More importantly, says Schaffer, the operators of the medical marijuana clubs are no longer afraid of the Federal Government. "If you talk to them, you will find that they know they are going to win this battle. They know that the DEA is vastly outnumbered and can't begin to prosecute all of them. The few that are prosecuted are accepting their fate as martyrs because they know that what they are doing is right. They are willing to sacrifice themselves to make the point that the Federal Government has just gone too far in interfering with very personal and private decisions. There is no way the DEA is going to win this battle. At this point, it is all over but the counting of the money -- and the victims of the DEA."

Schaffer went on to say that the national market for marijuana has been estimated from a low of ten billion dollars per year to more than fifty billion dollars per year. "The first states to regulate and tax marijuana will receive an economic bonanza bigger than the original California Gold Rush," says Schaffer. "Some states will get rich like the Saudis." Schaffer predicts that it will not take long for some local areas to wake up to the economic possibilities. "We are talking potentially big bucks here," he said. "The Canadians are already starting to take note of a cannabis-fueled economic boom in some areas. Politicians can't resist fresh cash, especially when it is coming to their local community. There will be big winners and losers here. The winners will be the ones who recognize the foregone conclusion first."

The group also cites foreign terrorism as a reason to regulate and tax marijuana. "Drug Czar John Walters is being dishonest when he says that marijuana money goes to criminals and terrorists. The only reason any of that money goes to criminals or terrorists is because of the prohibition that Walters supports," said Schaffer. "Marijuana prohibition makes criminals rich just like alcohol prohibition did. The criminals are now so rich and powerful that they can challenge the legitimate governments of their own countries. There is no reason to send billions of dollars per year to foreign criminal gangs when patriotic Americans make the best products in the world. There is no reason to suffer such a huge foreign trade deficit when that money could be providing jobs and funding badly needed services right here in the USA."

Let Us Pay Taxes calls upon all US citizens to sign their petition at their web site Let Us Pay Taxes and press the issue with their lawmakers. "Take the money, please," said Schaffer. "These people want to contribute. Now it is up to our politicians to tell us why they want to send those billions to foreign criminal gangs rather than to their own voters."

Another Timeline

Early in 2008, I awoke from a dream where I experienced an alternative Timeline. The dream was so real that it seemed to merge with our reality. The parallel timeline was experiencing dramatic environmental [weather related] Earth Changes.

Young people had taken refuge in what seemed to be an airport in Switzerland. Outside, the weather situation was cataclysmic. The society at large wished to protect their young. The people I saw were dressed in indigo/purple loose fitting clothing. Everyone appeared calm in the midst of a storm. I had a sense that the clothing was of fine woven Hemp fibres. The clothing was both natural, beautiful and durable.

I had an impression that our world and their world shared the same experience. It was as though all timelines were entering similar planetary cycle upheavals. The difference was in how each of us responded to the situations as they unfolded.

What is society, other than the totality of the behaviour/focus people embrace [live out] at any point in space time?

In the other timeline, nature is our friend. The Hemp plant (in the other timeline) is perceived as a natural and effective woven protection fabric - in the same way our Celtic ancestors used the plant fibres.

Men and women did not have the same psychological problems seen in this timeline. There was a sense of peace. I had the impression that the other timeline had resolved co-operation between parent and child, man and woman, state (federation) and individual, animal/plant and human. I am the world and the world is me.

The base physical-brutal mind believes it is the power/ego force that rules planetary events, plants, ocean creatures, animals, insects, trees, rivers and the feminine (through violence and wars, herbicides, insecticides)

The other world I saw in my dreams was gentle, peaceful, a part of nature - not the enemy of nature...

In some way this is why you see a struggle between the anti-reality, anti-nature matrix mind and the natural part-of-cosmos mind, who have lost their sense of balance.

All rivers lead to the sea, and in some way the dream revealed a timeline-river flowing successfully and naturally to the sea.

2012 is not a physical environmental change. We are spirit (emotion) walking through matter. The cycle transition of 2012 is the shift of those who see facing the sadness of those caught in division, violence and separation.

The spirits who see have to move naturally to another level, leaving behind those they love. The brutal material focused entity is attached to its anger, fears, ego-separation and violence. The finer aethric love/heart based spirit can no longer share the brutal physical attachment of service-to-self (ego).

2012 is not a date from a calendar cycle.. it is a state of consciousness.

Building With Hemp


Imagine you get into the deeper regions of the future Urwald [ancient forest], and in that future people just don't act the way we do today. Products and methods of production in the deeper regions of the future include advanced space crafts made from highly versatile hemp fibres. Is There Really a Shortage Of Wood?
The U.S. timber products industry spends millions of dollars each year promoting the idea that building with wood is an environmentally sound choice. Their ads claim that there are more trees in America today than ever before. The subtle trap is that these statistics do not differentiate between young sapwood trees and high-quality heartwood, or between diverse natural forests and single-species tree farms.

In the U.S. today, less than five percent of our original forest cover remains, and the clearcutting of old-growth forests continues. Intact forests support indigenous peoples, shelter wildlife, maintain the quality of fisheries and watersheds, conserve soil, moderate the global climate, and store much of the planet's genetic material. They may be our most important natural resource.

The construction industry uses 46 percent of the softwoods harvested in the U.S., for framing lumber and plywood, most of which comes from the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia. The U.S. Forest Service predicts that harvests from the Pacific Northwest have peaked and will fall steadily over the next ten years (Adams, 1994). Present demand has exceeded our forests' ability to supply lumber, even with the industry's prevailing unsustainable practices. British Columbia, however, now has one of the highest logging rates in the world: an acre of old-growth forest is clearcut every 66 seconds (Rainforest Action Network, 1995). Building With Hemp
A variety of wood-like products, such as fiberboard, roofing tiles, wallboard, paneling, insulation and bricks, can be made from the compressed hurds. The fibers can also be used like straw in bale wall construction or with mud in a sort of modified cob style of building.

Pipes can be made out of hempcrete and they, too have greater flexibility and greater elasticity than other those made from conventional materials, and they are resistant to cracking. Stones can also be made out of hemp by wetting the stalk’s cellulose, and forming it into a hard black rock, which can be cut, drilled, cast, carved or formed into any shape.

A hemp crop can be grown without the use of herbicides or insecticides and produces up to four tonnes of material per acre per year. Hemp is categorized as a bast fiber crop. It has a stem consisting of an outer skin containing long, strong fibers and a hollow wood-like core or pith. Hemp - Building Material of The Future
Hemp has been used by mankind for thousands of years. It has always been considered a valuable raw material for clothes, paper, oil & medicine. Building The Future With Hemp

All over the Pacific Northwest one can see the effects of the massive deforestation that's been taking place out there during the past 20 years. Whole valleys and mountainsides have been clear-cut - stripped of all plant life - to meet our insatiable demand for fiber, paper and wood. So when High Times learned that Bill Conde, a longtime hemp activist who once ran for governor of Oregon, was researching making an alternative to plywood utilizing hemp, we decided to look into it.

What immediately stands out when going to see Conde is the huge billboard for Conde's Redwood Lumber on the side of Interstate 5, just outside of Harrisburg, Oregon. On one side of the company name is a giant green marijuana leaf and on the other side is an American flag inside a peace sign. In the heart of lumber country, the lumber industry is talking about planting hemp and converting to it as a primary source of fiber. Credit goes largely to Conde, David Seber and Barry Davis, partners in the research and development company called C & S, the company at the forefront in research on hemp use for fiber. HT met with Conde and Seber - Davis was unavailable - to find out what progress they've made in developing a substitute for clear-cutting old-growth forest.

High Times: Bill, why don't you tell me about where you grew up and how you ended up in the lumber business?

Bill Conde: I was born in 1943 and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. Grew up there, graduated from high school, went into the military for four years, then went to work at several different places. I ended up involved in the mobile home industry, where I had to buy redwood. I moved to Oregon about twenty years ago and opened up a redwood lumber yard down in Cottage Grove. One day while I was driving home from a delivery I picked up this hitchhiker - David Seber - and we've been buddies ever since. He's the "S" in C&S.

HT: When and why did you start working to develop hemp fiber for commercial use?

BC: David and I have been working on hemp as a fiber for nearly four years now. The why of it really has to do with twenty-five years of being an old-growth redwood merchant, working with the dead bodies of the oldest living things on the planet. It starts weighing heavy on you if you have any conscience at all.

I just reached point where I asked myself, "What's my life for?" I mean, it surely wasn't just to cut down old trees and make picnic tables and decks out of them. And that's when I realized that as someone in the industry I was in a position to help make the change over, to change the fiber that's being utilized. So David, Barry Davis and I formed C&S to try to do just that. And in the four years we've been working on it we've made great progress.

HT: When I ask hemp activists, they say Bill Conde's the guy who's been active the longest. Any truth to that?

BC: In the state of Oregon that's probably true, but there are a lot of us who have been doing it a long time. Personally, I was really encouraged years ago - back in the sixties - when I saw a guy walk into a courtroom in Southern California with a live plant in his hand and set it on the judge's desk. It had a little sign that said "God grew it." That was my first inkling that something was really wrong with the way the whole system was. Actually, the first time I smoked a joint, I knew there was something wrong with the laws.

HT: Why don't you tell me a little about yourself, David?

David Seber: I was born and grew up on the East Coast. I attended two universities, Fairleigh Dickinson College and the University of Denver, in which I hid in the late sixties until coming in contact with the whole counterculture movement. I've been a hemp enthusiast ever since.

In 1980, after working in the ceramic tile industry and doing international business representing Japan, Korea and Brazil in the US market, I went into the lumber business. I established a redwood lumber yard down in southern Oregon working with William - who taught me everything I know about the lumber business - and I've been associated with it ever since. Eventually we came to the conclusion that it was time - because we had made a good part of our living from wood - that we ought to give something back to the forests and decided to look into establishing hemp as an alternative for wood. When we started looking for a place to begin we came up with the idea of fiberboard.

HT: How did you come up with that?

DS: Well, after making an initial study of "hemp activities" that were going on, we determined that no one was doing anything in terms of construction products whatsoever. Then I came across a book called "Modern Particle Board and Fiberboard Manufacturing," and William and I learned what the industry was about. The author's name is Tom Malone, and I called him. It turns out Tom is the foremost expert in wood construction composites in the world and runs the wood products laboratory at the Washington State University. We went to visit him and presented him with what we thought was the potential for the use of the hemp fiber in replacing wood. And not only did he confirm to us the impending timber shortage and the real need for a substitute, but he felt hemp had great potential.

HT: How did you go about beginning the actual work on the idea?

DS: We immediately made an agreement to enter into a formal contractual relationship between our company, C&S Specialty Builders, and Washington State University, then went about locating and importing some fiber for him. I ended up connecting with the French Hemp Institute of Le Mans, which provided us with fifteen hundred pounds of hemp fiber. At the same time, we started making our initial contacts in the lumber industry to see if we could generate some interest in what we were doing. And although we were initially met mostly with snickers, there were a few people who were interested in the idea.

Now when you talk to production-level people in the lumber industry, you don't ask, "How did the wood turn out?" You ask, "How was the fiber?" If the fiber's good, you know you have good stock coming back. If the fiber is bad, you know you're in trouble with the lumber you're going to receive. Inside the industry everyone anywhere near a production capacity relates to wood not as wood, but as fiber, and we were really on to something with the fiber aspect of what hemp could do.

HT: So you're confident hemp fiber has applications. Where did you go from there?

DS: We started to approach various sources to see if we could, first, import the fiber, and second, whether we could get manufacturers interested in producing products out of such a thing. I am still working on locating sources to import this raw material because even for our trials we need a pretty massive amount of hemp fiber. The lumber industry is built on the concept of giant volumes, continuous production, and very low profit margins relative to the value of the product. When you talk about your average composite factory, you're talking about a place that uses anywhere from a thousand to fifteen hundred dry tons of biomass in the form of wood chips every day, seven days a week. That's how the industry is set up.

So we started to design programs to show the industry how they could switch over, how we could present them with a replacement fiber for wood that they literally could use in their existing facilities. Because the amount of wood fiber that's being used is so massive, we couldn't find any other plant that has any hope of giving us enough raw material to supply the amount of fiber that's used from the forest today.

HT: Didn't C&S come up with a number like ninety-four million acres of timber versus four million acres of hemp?

BC: It's about that. According to the US Forest Service in Washington State, in the Pacific Northwest forests - which are the most productive forests in the world today - the average yield per acre, per year, is four hundred fifty-nine board feet. Now, if you take that four hundred fifty-nine board feet of lumber and you dry it down, take all of the moisture out of it, you have about seven hundred pounds of fiber per acre, per year.

HT: What do you get with hemp?

BC: The very first crop of commercial hemp harvested in England recently - and they don't know diddly yet - produced four tons of fiber per acre.

HT: More than ten times the yield.

BC: And that was in a hundred and twenty days. A good hemp fiber crop will give you up to ten tons per acre in a hundred to a hundred and twenty days. Which is twenty times as much production as with timber. Now consider that every year in the United States we use forty-five million tons of tree fiber for paper alone, which takes the annual growth of ninety million acres of mature forest. With hemp's ten tons to an acre, it would only take four-and-a-half million acres to satisfy our pulp needs. Even in a worst-case scenario - a single crop annually - it would only take nine million acres of hemp to supply the pulp. The complete thing would be nine million acres.

HT: So you're looking at annual yields of hemp that compare favorably to tree yields that don't replenish for twenty-five years.

BC: Twenty, twenty-five years is a bare minimum. There are some specialty trees, cottonwood for instance, from which you can get a crop out in seven or eight years. But even those will not produce as much fiber per acre after ten years of growth as what hemp will do in a hundred to a hundred and twenty days. And not only that, hemp fiber is superior.

HT: Why is that?

BC: For several reasons. Number one, it's superior in its strength to tree fiber. Secondly, it way out-produces tree fiber. Lumber industry people talk about trees' renewability. Yes, trees are renewable. Oil is renewable, too, if you've got a hundred million years to hang around! It's all renewable, but is it sustainable? Anytime you cut down a tree, it takes longer for the tree to grow than the life of the product that you're making from it. So, it's not sustainable from that point of view. Now hemp, on the other hand, takes a hundred to a hundred twenty days to grow, and that's sustainability.

Additionally, there are a number of environmental factors to consider, particularly in the making of paper products from pulp, the most important of which has to do with a substance called lignin. Tree fiber has lignin in it. Lignin is extracted with chlorine, a major river pollutant that converts to dioxins and so forth. Hemp though, is very low in lignin, so low that you can use hydrogen peroxide to break the lignin out. Which doesn't pollute anything.

So hemp fiber is superior in every way conceivable to tree fiber.

HT: What about hemp's effect on the soil? After you grow it for five years is your soil going to be completely depleted?

BC: As a matter of fact, just the opposite. Hemp is utilized to refurbish soil. Hemp leaf is fifty percent nitrogen. You take the leaf and put it back down into the ground to enrich it. The truth of the matter is we could take this damn clay soil out here in Oregon and make it into beautiful soil. Hemp is such a short crop that you don't have to rotate it, and you can grow companion crops with it. Around the world hemp has been grown on the same ground for years and years without depleting the soil.
